Are bonus buys worth it?
A bonus buy charges a stated multiple of your stake and opens a named feature. A provider name, volatility label, or base-game RTP cannot show whether the buy has the same return. The comparison needs the exact mode, its price, and an RTP source for the same game build.

What a documented comparison needs
Record the exact title, game build, mode name, and price in stake multiples. Record the base-game RTP and the mode RTP. Keep the source URL and check date with each value. A value from another title, version, or unnamed feature does not support the comparison. The mode RTP is not documented when no separate source states it.
The EV framing
RTP is a long-run rate. A buy price is an amount. When a dated source states the mode RTP, the expected loss per purchase is buy price × (1 − RTP). For example, a hypothetical 100× buy at 96% RTP has an expected loss of 4 base stakes. The calculation does not predict one buy. If only the base-game RTP is known, label any mode calculation as an assumption.
What you are really buying: variance and speed
A buy concentrates a larger amount of turnover into one decision and reaches the named feature without waiting for a base-game trigger. That makes exposure easier to accelerate. The recorded volatility label is only qualitative; it does not establish the median return, hit rate or likely outcome of a buy. Compare the full purchase price with your loss limit before using the sizing framework in our bankroll guide.
How to check the number yourself
Start with the in-game paytable or information screen for the build that you can access. Compare it with a provider page or other cited record for that exact title and mode. Save the mode label, displayed cost, RTP, URL and checked date together. If the buy screen or paytable shows no separate figure, record the mode RTP as not documented. Do not borrow the base RTP or another mode's figure and relabel it as exact.
Where buys are not available
Availability can vary by jurisdiction, operator and game build. This guide does not infer legal availability from a provider or licence label; check the current local rules and the live game interface. A casino may also restrict feature purchases while a deposit bonus is being wagered, so verify the exact promotion terms covered in our bonus terms guide before playing.
A fair verdict
- Compare only an exact game, build and named mode with its own visible source.
- Translate a documented mode into expected cost: buy price × (1 − RTP).
- Keep the mode RTP unknown when a separate mode value is not documented.
- Do not use a qualitative volatility label as a substitute for mode-specific math.
- Never escalate purchase size after losses, and verify any active wagering requirement before buying a feature.
