RTP vs house edge
Return to player (RTP) and house edge describe complementary shares of the same wagers.A 96% RTP gives a 4% house edge because house edge equals 100% minus RTP. Payout speed measures the time needed to process a withdrawal. Casino promotions can use the word "payout" for both concepts. Check which concept a claim describes.
One price, two notations
Slots usually state RTP, the theoretical share returned over a very large number of wagers. Table games often state house edge, the theoretical share retained by the operator. A 96.5% RTP gives a 3.5% house edge. Single-zero roulette has a 2.7% house edge and an equivalent 97.3% RTP. Blackjack can have an edge near 0.5% under stated rules and correct basic strategy. The equivalent RTP is near 99.5%. At the same total amount wagered, a lower house edge gives a lower theoretical expected loss.
Calculate theoretical cost per hour
Theoretical cost per hour equals house edge multiplied by stake and bets per hour. A $1 slot with 500 hourly spins creates $500 in hourly wagers. At a 4% edge, the theoretical expected cost is $20 per hour. Eighty $10 blackjack hands create $800 in hourly wagers. At a 0.5% edge, the theoretical expected cost is $4 per hour. The examples show why stake, pace and edge must be compared together. Our session-cost calculator performs the same arithmetic. Recorded volatility describes outcome variation. Recorded volatility does not predict how far one session will be from the long-run expectation.
The conversion also clarifies comparisons between slot versions. A 94% RTP gives a 6% house edge. A 97% RTP gives a 3% house edge. At the same stake and pace, the 3% edge halves the theoretical expected cost. Subtract each RTP from 100% before you compare the house edges.
Payout speed measures withdrawal processing
Payout speed has no connection to game odds. The operator controls withdrawal approval. The payment method controls settlement after approval. An approved crypto withdrawal can settle within minutes or hours on some networks. A bank withdrawal can take several days. Game rules define RTP. Operator procedures define approval time, identity checks and withdrawal limits. A recorded RTP range does not prove which values remain current. The range also does not identify the value used by one casino. Our casino research records track available information about withdrawal procedures.
Three questions, three numbers
- Use RTP, house edge and pace to calculate theoretical long-run cost.
- Use documented volatility and hit frequency to describe the game's outcome model.
- Use withdrawal records, license information and KYC policy to assess payout procedures.
Summary
- House edge equals 100% minus RTP.
- RTP and house edge do not predict one session.
- Compare formats on cost per hour: edge × stake × bets per hour.
- Use payout speed only to assess the operator and payment process.
- Check the RTP in your casino's own paytable. A recorded range does not identify the active value.
