Can casinos change a slot's RTP?

By RTP Ledger Editorial Team · Published · Last materially updated

Sometimes. Within the cited GLI-19 scope, RTP Ledger infers that an operator may choose among tested RTP configurations when a supplier exposes them. GLI-19 separately allows operator choice of a final system configuration and requires RTP-affecting changes to be recorded. It does not prove that a particular game offers those choices. This is a deployment-level choice, not permission to edit the mathematics per spin or target one player. A legitimate change in theoretical RTP should correspond to a distinct, identifiable game version, paytable, mode or configuration. The displayed number alone does not prove what runs. Treat a display mismatch or integration error as unresolved, and never use an RTP Ledger range alone to identify the active value.

What can a casino operator actually choose?

GLI-19 describes configurable game features being communicated for evaluation and the operator choosing the final system configuration. It does not specifically say that every RTP setting is operator-selectable. The conditional answer above is an inference from that configuration rule and the standard's separate RTP-change record requirement. The standard does not support a claim that a casino can freely change the result of an individual round. It also does not establish that every supplier, game or jurisdiction offers the same choices.

What is an RTP version?

An RTP version is a distinct mathematical configuration of a game. Its paytable, feature contribution or jackpot contribution can produce a different theoretical return. A lower theoretical RTP means a higher theoretical house edge: 94% RTP corresponds to 6% house edge, while 96% corresponds to 4%.

Within the cited GLI-19 and UK Gambling Commission scopes, testing and reporting controls tie the theoretical value to an identifiable game configuration. GLI-19 requires records of the initial theoretical RTP and changes that affect it; the standard does not assign that duty to a named party. The UK Gambling Commission's testing procedure names game title, RTP, software number and digital signature among the game details used in testing. These controls do not prove that every supplier offers multiple versions or that every jurisdiction adopts the same standard.

Why can two versions show different RTP?

Possible explanations must be kept separate because they are not interchangeable evidence:

  • A provider-supplied build or paytable can use a different mathematical configuration.
  • A player-selected mode, feature or bet type can have its own published RTP.
  • A regional or jurisdiction-specific build can carry different certified rules.
  • Feature or jackpot contributions can change the theoretical return described by the rules.
  • A display, reporting or integration error can create a mismatch; it is not proof of the configuration actually used.

What do RTP Ledger's recorded ranges prove?

RTP Ledger currently contains 406 non-conflicted slot records with more than one RTP value, but 0 ranges have qualifying public evidence for both endpoints. 0 ranges have evidence for one endpoint and 406 have neither endpoint fully supported under the current source gate.

This is a useful research inventory, not a list of current selectable builds. “Recorded RTP-value gap” on RTP Ledger means the highest recorded value minus the lowest recorded value for the same slot entity. It does not mean RTP Ledger observed a casino switching between them.

How do you find the active RTP?

  1. Open the game's information, help or paytable before placing a bet.
  2. Record the complete game name, provider, displayed RTP, casino, market and date.
  3. If shown, record the software/build number and selected mode or bet type.
  4. Compare the displayed value with the individual RTP Ledger slot record and its field-level source status.
  5. If the game does not display a value, treat the active RTP as unknown. Do not substitute the top of a public range.

Is theoretical RTP the same as actual return?

No. Theoretical RTP comes from the game's mathematical model. Actual or realized RTP is total wins divided by total stakes over a stated population and period. The UK Gambling Commission requires licensed operators in its scope to monitor actual performance against expected RTP. That operator-level monitoring is not the same as a player's short session.

Does a lower RTP prove a slot is rigged?

No. A lower disclosed theoretical RTP describes a more expensive mathematical version; it does not by itself prove manipulation or unfair result generation. A fairness assessment needs the exact build, rules, regulator, test evidence and result-generation controls. RTP Ledger does not certify RNGs or infer fairness from a single RTP number.
